"Koblet bent his back to the wheel. At the finish he crossed the line victorious, stopped his watch, took out a comb to comb his hair and waited the arrival of the peloton. Answered Prayers is the final (unfinished) novel by Truman Capote. Capote himself had said of it "either I'm going to kill it, or it's going to kill me". It may not quite have killed him but it certainly killed his career as a socialite when the first four chapters of it were serialised by Esquire Magazine in 1975-6.

The stories deal with the lives and gossip of the high society, beau monde, rich American, over polished, too thin and too rich heiresses and WAGs that formed Capote's desperate social circle. His merciless depictions of them (with their names barely changed) and his reportage almost verbatim of drunken lunchtime conversations, scandalised the upper classes. After the publication of the second story "La Cote Basque" (then an upscale eatery in New York and favoured hang out of the Long Island set) they cut him dead

Capote died in 1984, an event Gore Vidal described as "a good career move"

Ultimately, Capote died divorced from the world he had so longed for, bitter, defeated and drunk as a skunk. Unable to admit his mistake, he spent his last days protesting too much that he had never cared for these people or their trappings of wealth and priviledge

The fancy drilled out semi-massive straps are still available (allegedly) from Volmer in Germany although I can't actually find a vendor. They're called "Aristo Rallye" bracelets. You can buy a watch here. If you find the bracelet on sale on it's own anywhere let me know. Volmer no longer show it in their catalogue but they do list a very open link bracelet sinilar to the original Doxa pattern.

The keen eyed will notice the Jenny fish logo has been known to appear on Doxa cases too. There seems to have been some cross over between O&W, Jenny and Doxa although reading through the various watch forums online it's not clear exactly what the relationship was. Perhaps O&W and Doxa simply purchased cases and/or licenses from Jenny or perhaps O&W manufactured on behalf of the other two marques. The answer seems lost in the mists...

Madmen returns with season 5 (and 6) going into production later this year. It'll be 2012 before it airs anywhere and possibly late 2012 going into 2013 before we see it in the UK.

Who's to say that by then the hype will have died down and no-one will care? Already this year in Britain we've seen the Killing (which blew everything else clean out the water) and from this Saturday night past we've been immersed in season 3 of French Policier Engrenages, marketed as Spiral 3 in the UK and subtitled "The Butcher of Villette". With Sara Lund's wee jumper a fond memory and our hearts once more lost to the careworn charms of Laure Berthaud, Gilou et al and with Madmen moving to pay TV (it's been secured by Rupert Murdoch's Sky from season 5 onward) it will certainly loose a proportion of it's viewers and this huge gap between series can only make that migration worse.

I wonder of they'll move the timeframe up to the mid 70's? Kipper tie, anyone?

Marc Madiot's 1985 Gitane Delta TT Bike, complete with oddly modified steerer tube, pointy cow-horn bars, flattened ovaloid tubing, classic yellow Rolls saddle and matching Benotto bar ribbon. Looks like Super Record transmission although many commercial Gitane bikes of the period had Spidel components.

Spidel never really existed as a Gruppo - it was a 1980 collaboration between French component manufacturers in response to competition from SunTour, Shimano and Campag who had started to provide OEM groupsets direct to frame builders and manufacturers. Previously it was more usual to supply bikes with a mixture of components, Weinmann for brakes, Huret for gears, Rigida for rims etc.

Under the Spidel badge, Mafac (brakes), Maillard (hubs and pedals), Simplex (transmission) and Stronglight (chainsets) produced their own components, changing nothing but the name. Hilariously, it was never possible to purchase as a Gruppo - the individual bits had to be purchased from the different makers! Perhaps this why the venture failed although it's as likely to have ended as none of the manufacturers involved ever thought to unify the look of the various bits beyond sticking on the Spidel badge. Hence the Gruppo never looked like a match, unlike the early Shimano, Suntour and Campag sets which were starting to be fitted in the mid eighties. A Spidel equipped Gitane can be seen here

A similar fate befell Frexa at about the same time. Frexa was a collaboration between Rigida (rims) and Huret (transmission) with (I think) Maillard and Poutrait-Morin. Poutrait-Mourin became Zefal some time in the 80s. They marketed various still familiar brands such as Christophe toe clips and straps and of course Zefal pumps. Again, due to logistical problems (and the sudden desire of every cyclist to possess a bicycle with a matched groupset) the marque never caught on.

Many of these Companies have now disappeared altogether, leaving Shimano and Campag in near unassailable control of the field.

As a writer and broadcaster about the arts, Jonathan Meades is essentially a nightmare that is happening to the spinning cadaver of Kenneth Clark. Though the great late pundit was much more of a democrat than he is commonly reputed to be in retrospect, he nevertheless embodied the idea that taste and knowledge were the preserves of gentlemen. Meades knows which fork to pick up, but he is deeply the other thing: an educated upstart who not only doesn’t know his place, but knows far more than his allotted share about all the other places. In his TV series of 2007 he at last, after several previous efforts heading in the same direction, arrived at a tour of recent English building styles that matched his vivid commentary with an appropriately disciplined visual bravura. The splendidly unsettling results owed a lot to Sir John Betjeman’s quondam ambulatory style, but superseded it as a Volkswagen Beetle dragster with a chrome-plated V8 engine in the back supersedes the original. The tradition that started with Betjeman and Piper’s Shell guides can now be said to have reached a culmination in the personality of Meades. The latest and most subversive exemplar of a useful broadcasting tradition, he still startles me most in his journalism, which is best approached through his collection Peter Knows What Dick Likes (Paladin, 1989). The pieces selected here prove his gift for reaching sideways out of aesthetics and bringing in the sociology and the politics as well, with no care for who gets offended. (I myself continue to be deeply miffed by his piece about Blade Runner: doesn’t he realise that my own dress sense spent twenty years in debt to Deckard? Or perhaps he does.) Meades is a superb political commentator even on an historical scale. Nobody has written better about the mystical proclivities of the top Nazis, and a TV show of his that connected Himmler’s sinister mystical vision with King Arthur’s Camelot is still in my mind when I wake sweating in the night. To induce such discomfort is part of the Meades mission. Clearly it is a mental area in which he lives every day. The wonder is that it doesn’t scramble the powers of composition behind a prose style so pugnaciously cultivated, so unpredictably informative, and, enviably often, so extremely funny.

Wilton's is a British classic

Always in the St James's area, Wilton’s opened in 1742 as a stall selling oysters, shrimps and cockles in the Haymarket. It was owned by George William Wilton, a local fishmonger. Business prospered and under the management of George’s nephew, William, moved in 1805 to Cockspur Street, to be called Wilton’s Shellfish Mongers and Oyster Rooms

Thanks to interfering town planners the next 50 years saw the premises move around St James's, finally becoming a fully-fledged restaurant in 1840 in Ryder Street, then named Wilton’s Oyster Rooms. In 1884, as Purveyor of Oysters to Queen Victoria, the first Royal Warrant was received and a second as Purveyors to the Prince of Wales was granted later that year

In 1889, the restaurant moved out of the family for the first time and was bought by David Edwin Winder, moving to larger premises in Duke Street until 1913, when it returned to King Street, St James's. It was at this time that Wilton’s attracted a gastronomic clientele. The license was taken over in 1930 by Mrs Bessie Leal until 1942, mid-war, when Olaf Hambro, who happened to be eating oysters alone at the bar as a bomb landed on St James's Church, Piccadilly, asked for the restaurant to be added to his bill as Mrs Leal folded her tea towel and apron and declared Wilton’s closed

Mr Hambro engaged the services of Jimmy Marks, then oyster man at Bucks Club, and reopened a week later. Wilton’s moved to Bury Street in 1964, then to its current site at 55 Jermyn Street in 1984

This latest address is ideal for Wilton's clientele of MPs, Captains of Industry and members of the British aristocracy. A jacket and tie is required at all times except Sunday lunch when only a jacket is required

All this tradition comes at a price, and Wiltons has become synonymous with the very well-to-do and a clientele that knows exactly what it wants. The décor is impeccable. The à la carte embraces the full range of culinary dexterity and first courses of dressed crab, smoked eel or lobster bisque Newburg also leave room for hot or cold beef consommé. Wild turbot is served grilled or poached and Dover sole comes grilled, poached, meunière or as goujons. Top of the range is the Scottish lobster, again in four different manifestations. Whilst Wilton's is invariably associated with the fruits of the sea, the grill offers classic lamb kidneys and bacon or lamb cutlets. Traditional puddings include sherry trifle, bread and butter pudding and apple and fig crumble. At the bar, savoury snacks are available including anchovies on toast, Welsh rarebit and mushrooms on toast.

Wilton's does a famous line in upmarket picnic baskets, traditionally ordered for society events such as Henley, Glyndebourne, the Calcutta Cup and Ascot. This Spring's basket contains wild smoked salmon, Scottish langoustines, chilled lobster, potato salad, rice and mint salad, cherry tomato and tarragon salad, English asparagus, marinated spring lamb, rhubarb trifle, gingerbread, Cornish yarg and Oxford blue, country bread, Wilton's Champagne and Wilton's Red Burgundy. The basket is made exclusively from the finest Polish wicker with bespoke leather handles and monogrammed leather luggage tags. It contains china, glassware, cutlery, picnic blanket, and napkins and even a cool bag for the food and wines with an extra ice pack to keep things at the correct temperature. Who could ask for more?

Sir George Shearing died yesterday. The inventor of the "locked hands" technique, his quintet dominated American Jazz during the late fifties and early sixties. "On the Road" has some great passages describing jazz performances. Here's one on hearing George Shearing at Birdland:

Dean and I went to see Shearing at Birdland in the midst of the long, mad weekend. The place was deserted, we were the first customers, ten o'clock. Shearing came out, blind, led by the hand to his keyboard. He was a distinguished-looking Englishman with a stiff white collar, slightly beefy, blond, with a delicate English-summer's-night air about him that came out in the first rippling sweet number he played as the bass-player leaned to him reverently and thrummed the beat. The drummer, Denzil Best, sat motionless except for his wrists snapping the brushes. And Shearing began to rock; a smile broke over his ecstatic face; he began to rock in the piano seat, back and forth, slowly at first, then the beat went up, and he began rocking fast, his left foot jumped up with every beat, his neck began to rock crookedly, he brought his face down to the keys, he pushed his hair back, his combed hair dissolved, he began to sweat. The music picked up. The bass-player hunched over and socked it in, faster and faster, it seemed faster and faster, that's all. Shearing began to play his chords; they rolled out of the piano in great rich showers, you'd think the man wouldn't have time to line them up. They rolled and rolled like the sea. Folks yelled for him to "Go!" Dean was sweating; the sweat poured down his collar. "There he is! That's him! Old God! Old God Shearing! Yes! Yes! Yes!" And Shearing was conscious of the madman behind him, he could hear every one of Dean's gasps and imprecations, he could sense it though he couldn't see. "That's right!" Dean said. "Yes!" Shearing smiled, he rocked. Shearing rose from the piano, dripping with sweat; these were his great 1949 days before he became cool and commercial. When he was gone Dean pointed to the empty piano seat. "God's empty chair," he said. On the piano a horn sat; its golden shadow made a strange reflection along the desert caravan painted on the wall behind the drums. God was gone; it was the silence of his departure. It was a rainy night. It was the myth of the rainy night. Dean was popeyed with awe. This madness would lead nowhere.
