"Gascogne", béret, catalogue 2001

In 1933 Jankel Grimbert, a tailor on the “Rive Droite” in Paris, helps his two sons to open a shop. Leon and Albert, who have just finished their studies, choose Saint-Germain-Des-Pres, the quarter they know well, with its universities, intellectuals, and publishers. Hence Arnys will be one of the first luxury shops to open on the “Rive Gauche” which had long been deserted by the fashion world. The two brothers’ goal is to echo the world they belong to: one of classical elegance, coupled with a certain nonchalance, moving away from the imposed conformity of the time. In 1945, the Saint-Germain-des-Pres quarter bursts in many directions, with dance, writing at the Flore, listening to Sydney Bechet’s clarinet and above all inventing a new style, simple and modern. The black sweater makes its appearance, forms loosen and soften, for arnys this corresponds to the creation of an emblematic garment: La Forestiere
